SuNdAY sALon- books I loved that I never thought I'd even like.

The image “http://www.darienlibrary.org/connections/teens/archives/glass%20castle.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

I am currently reading "The Glass Castle" By Jeannette Walls. Oh, goodness I never even thought I 'd like this book and I can't stop with it. The voice is so strong. Many times memoirs are not exciting enough, and I tend to enjoy fiction because of it...this book has rocked my boat as far as non-fiction. I LOVE the kids in this book, they are strong, true, honest, and try to never give up hope in the parents that always let them down. For sure this is one of my best reads of the year. What are some books that you thought you just would have to plug through, but once you opened the cover you had never been so wrong? I know for sure that The Glass Castle for sure fits into that category. Have you read it?

Such a good question.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (and no one I've recommended this book to has liked it or finished it, so maybe my initial impressions were sound).

The Road (I wouldn't really say that I loved it, but I admired it.)

The Things They Carried

The Great Gatsby

Sounder

A lot of books that are recommended to me don't initially seem like they will be my kind of book.

On page 10 or so of The Road, I thought I was going to hate it. By 25 it had grabbed me and was a favorite read last year.

I have The Glass Castle to listen to on audiobook soon.

Great question. That happened to me just recently with The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, which I mentioned in my Sunday Salon post today. I was SO annoyed when my book group picked it. I almost didn't bother. And now it is completely blowing me away.

I loved the Glass Castle. As far as books I loved but never thought I'd even like, I'd have to say Life of Pi. I thought it was going to be too heady or something. Instead, it was compelling and thought provoking. I loved it. Good question! I'll email you about our upcoming conversation. :)

Yes, The Glass Castle was one of those for me.
Also, I'm reading Diane Ackerman's A Natural History of the Senses and it is one of the most interesting books I've ever read! I had no clue it would be so spell-binding.

Just had to write and say I too never thought I was going to like The Glass Castle but someone gave me a copy to read and I didn't want to return it without reading it. I thought it was an incredible story and have been recommending it to everyone. The last true story that affected me like this one was Angela's Ashes.

The Glass Castle was a WONDERFUL book!! Heartbreaking at times, it was the first memoir that I really thought was great. (I did read the Jim Frey books and loved them, as hard as they were to read. But I guess it's been established that they were too much fiction to be called "Memoir").

If you like the Glass Castle, you might enjoy The Tender Bar by JR Moehringer. Differnt type of trials, but beautifully written!
