Anne Of Green Gables
Title: Anne of Green Gables
Author: L.M. Montgomery
Pages: 304
Published: 1908
Genre: Classic Children's Literature
Anne of Green Gables is the tale of Anne and orphan girl child who comes by mistake to live at Green Gables. Which is the mistake? Well, that she should have been a boy, they requested a boy! She is the chattiest creature to have ever entered the life of the older brother and sister, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, maybe the chattiest creature I have read ever. Still, she is genuine, sweet and no matter how obnoxious- she is lovable. I must say that somewhere in the middle of the book she was no longer bothersome at all and I completely fell in love.
For the first several chapters I didn't really know if I'd make it through the book, and then I felt a duty to get at least a little ways into this classic before renouncing it forever. I would have made a horrid judgment call if I had! I don't know where it happened, but it did I fell in love with Anne. It may have been right around where she died her hair green, or where she should have forgiven her best enemy Gilbert, but I am not sure because all of the sudden I just couldn't get enough of her. When the book was done I immediately tried to get my hands on the next book, which is Anne of Avonlea. This is a classic that deserves it's title and honoured position, there is no doubt about it!
Have you read Anne of Green Gables too? Did you read it as a child or an adult? What book do you love that is considered a childhood classic that you just can't get enough of even being an adult?

I read this book just last year and yet I enjoyed it. I fell in love with the book right from the first page. I have the second book too, and i can't wait to see how the story progresses :)
Oh, you're just going and reminding me of how much I love this book! Surely I will love it again upon a re-read, especially given that this will probably be my hundredth or something, although it has been way too many years.
I don't know if I've read any childhood classics as an adult that I missed when I was little. Mostly I'm reading current YA because I just devoured everything available as a kid, whether it was girl's or boy's or a genre I didn't like, I really didn't care!

I'm amazed this is your first reading of Anne of Green Gables! I can't imagine my girlhood without these books (though Anne of Windy Poplars isn't all that great from what I remember). Maybe you would be equally shocked to know I have never read Watership Down. :) Anyway, I'm so glad you enjoyed it, and your review makes me want to pick it up again!
I read this book as a child or preteen. I t was hard for me to get into, I think I remember the writing being a little dense, but they had done that mini-series on PBS which I loved, and that helped me to continue reading the book. I went on to read the whole series. I would love to read the book again.
I own the entire series. I read them in high school and fell in love with Anne, too. I hope you get a chance to read the rest of the books.

I love these books, too. Like you, I didn't read them until I was an adult.
Oh! I have not read this book sadly! And I must, thanks for the lovely review, will keep in mind to not stop but go on reading :)
Like Veens, I have never read this book or the rest of the series. I watched a few episodes of the TV show when it was one, but I know that doesn't count. :-) I am glad you enjoyed it so much.
I read the complete series 10 years ago! I was 16 and related to everything that Anne did.. I loved it then! I am revisiting the series now.. and I am still loving it! I am nearly done with green gables.. and yes.. I do have the other audio books lines up so I can listen to all of them! Isn't Anne adorable? I love the slow transformation from a garrulous girl to a responsible adult!
It's been ages since I read this, but oh how I loved it as a child.
I first read it as a teen, but not until after I'd seen the tv version (which my family loved). I read a few more in the series, but liked the Emily of New Moon books better.
I also read these as a teen after seeing the movie. I loved the books though, and I own the whole set. I've only read them a couple of times as an adult, but there's no way I'm going to part with them.
I read this as a child. Perhaps it's time to revisit this book. Thanks for the review ;0)
Have you read Emily of New Moon? You might like that one too!
OH, I love Anne! I read through - literally, as the books fell apart- two copies of the series when I was young. The miniseries, from the 80s, produced by Kevin Sullivan and starring Megan Follows, is wonderful! If you like the book, you should give it a try.
gave my daughter the middle name "anne" :)
Ha! I just noticed I'd commented under my husband's name :)
I grew up with the Anne mini-series, so when I tried to read the book a few years ago I struggled. You need to try and get your hands on the video--so great! Anne is the best. :) Glad you enjoyed it afterall.
Did you ever see the movie? Like it as well?
I just finished the audio-book of this and it was the first time I had read it. I fell in love with Anne the moment Matthew laid eyes on her. Or maybe when they were on the way to Avonlea. I have made this year the year I read all the classics I missed as a kid and this was one of them. I posted a link to your review on my blog.
