YAY for Sunday Salon!!! Happy Sunday to all!
This was a good bookie week for me! ( I really hope it was for you as well). I read
Town House by Tish Cohen for my book club (well, our meeting is next month...but whatever. It seems I am always done early). I really enjoyed Town House, I am going to write a review today during the eventful Sunday Salon.
Last night I started a book that I have been wanting to read for a while,
Moving Parts by
Magdalena Tulli which is (so far) unlike anything I have ever read...and I mean that in a good way. However it is one of those books that does require concentration!
I wrote a post:
"to underline or not to underline" if you are a strong believer either way, let me know. I am interested to hear your perspective on why you should, or why you shouldn't underline a book that you own. I must be honest and say I am of the underlining crowd, but I have recently upgraded to pencil instead of pen (oh, yes I know some of you thin this is horrible). It is interesting though, because I lend tons of books, I constantly get compliments on how people enjoy reading another person's thoughts...what do you think? Do you?
Oh, and one of my most exciting things is that I FINALLY got a LibraryThing Early Review book, well I still need to wait for it to arrive in the post...but I GOT ONE!! Because of that I finally feel it is okay for me to place the LibraryThing Early Reviewer logo on my sidebar!!!! I am thrilled.

What an exciting week for you! The thing I have been reading the most is stuff to complete a law school writing assignment.
If I'm teaching a text then I will always buy a paperback copy that I can write in- in pencil because I might change my mind about something and want to alter what I've written. What really annoys me is when I pick up a library book and find that someone has underlined things. What really worries me about this is that another student might take whatever notes have been made as gospel and not do their own thinking. Those notes might be wrong!
I don't ever write in my books. It distracts me from the flow of the reading and it makes me feel self-conscious. If I am reading a book that I know I will blog about, or discuss at my book group, I will fold the corners on pages that I might want to quote from or refer to later. But I've never had the slightest inclination to write in my books, and I SURELY don't want to see someone else's underlining.
I got a LT Early Reviewer book as well! The one by Elizabeth Berg (love her writing). I've heard it can take quite awhile to recieve a book...but just so excited. ;)
Now, I'm off to comment on "To underline or not to underline..."
Happy Sunday to you!
Great news about the LT book! I look forward to your review of it.
I too made the switch to pencil underlining in books when I realized that I couldn't bear some of the things I had written in pen in my textbooks years earlier! But when I am teaching a text or working from it, it is indispensable for me to read with a pencil in hand. I just think in a different, more self-conscious way when I can interact with the text on that level. Plus, I am often fascinated by revisiting my old thought-processes and ideas upon a second (or third or fourth) rereading.
Yay for new books! I haven't signed up for any early reviews or advanced reading copies--I'm not sure why but they scare me a little. Like I'll have to write a "real" review? Silly!
And out of nosiness--where are you from? I know you live in Oregon, but I've noticed some curiosities in your language (post, favourite). :) When I was little I lived in Canada, but I've lost all of the differences in time (I was born in the states, though).
Happy Sunday Salon to you too! Congratulations on your first LibraryThing Earlier Review book.
I prefer not to write in my books and instead will make notations in a reading journal I keep by my side when I read. If I for some reason don't have that journal handy or those little page marker post-it notes, I may make a very light note on the side of the book in pencil. I prefer not to read a book with another reader's writing in it, but there are exceptions. Sometimes it can be quite interesting to see where the reader's footprints lead and share in their thoughts. I tend to find it very distracting though.
I hope you have a good week!
*beastmomma- Yes, it was very good. Well, it sounds like you had some interesting reading to do too...I hope it was fun for you!!
*table talk-
Yes, that makes sense. I know! underlining in library books...don't worry I only underline MY books. I see what you are saying about your students...but it will teach them to fight for understanding a bit more, and not just rely on all they see. right? Oh, that is another subject matter!!
*julie- You are a non-underliner...I know there are many people who agree with you completely. I am just not one of them. I love to write in my books, to dive in deep and not worry. But, I do completely understand your perspective as well. I think my biggest problem is that I am a HUGELY visual person, it is how I mark my spots and how I learn...more hands on type. Maybe that is why I do it!!
*mrs. b-YAY for you too!! Congrats on your LT book, I requested that one too...but I am very happy with what I got. Happy Sunday to you!!
*j.kaye oldner- Thank you!! Oh, that is very sweet. I love reviewing books and sparking people to read things that they wouldn't usually read! Fun stuff!!
*por of tor-
I so agree with you. I have chosen pencil lately too for the same reason! Sometimes what gets you once will never make sense again. I do agree though that there is something much deeper about taking complete ownership of the book and digging in deep...it is something I cannot read a book I own and not do, I have tried though.
*trish- Oh, you are such a great reviewer...you should do it. But it does have that aspect then that you feel you HAVE to review it, and SOON! I do get what you are saying!
Oh, I was born in Seattle, but I was raised in Spain. My parents are missionaries over there and I when I went to Spanish public schools we were also taught English...and of course not "American" but British English...I was often put on the spot by the teacher if I did not do things the "right" way...so because of that I still have some funky writing habits from it being rubbed and rubbed into my head. I don't however say rubbish bin anymore...!!! Oh, I moved back to the US when I was in College...so pretty much my whole life (the growing up part) was in Spain. I know that sometimes that makes my writing awkward, because I am bilingual sometimes I mix up the phasing of things.
Sorry for the super long explanation...it is the super annoying thing I have to do whenever anyone asks me: "where are you from?" I pretty much just stand there and try to figure out if they want the long version or the short version!
* literary feline- oh, by the way i love your name...we have three cats, and love cats like crazy!!
Oh, so on to your comment...I have tried to do the journal...but I end up re-coping the whole book into the journal, and it is SO time consuming. Plus to be completely honest I literally have illegible handwriting (passed down from my dad) and I can't read what I write!! Happy Sunday to you too!!!
THank you all for an amazing Sunday Salon..I need to go make my rounds now. Our computer monitor was blanking out on me all day and this is the first time I am able to check your Salons!! I am so getting a new computer soon!
I don't mind the long version--and I wasn't necessarily saying that your writing was funky or strange. :) I just noticed the little spelling differences and was curious!
*trish- oh, I know! I know.
hey...could you tell me how this library thing works? i got myself an account but i can't figure it out!
